Riddle Machines is bringing out the new idea of interactive fiction. This piece talks about what interactive fiction is and how it’s different from other games like The Sims and World of Warcraft. In The Sims, you create your sim and start building his or her’s life. You control what they do and when they do it just by the click of your mouse. With interactive fiction, it’s like you’re writing a story. When you want your avatar to do something you type it in and your avatar will do it. It’s like there’s no set rules to what your avatar can do. However, in The Sims you can only do much. In The Sims there is already a set dialogue between the characters. You can tell your sim to talk to a certain person about something but you don’t understand what they say to each other and you can’t control what they say. In interactive fiction, you type the whole conversation to the person. It’s completely in your control. In some ways though, interactive fiction is basically a story already written out. You have a certain mission and once you complete it, you win the game. But with The Sims you can keep playing for as long as you want. There isn’t really a set story being played out and there’s no way to win the game. The Sims has certain themes like The Sims Pets, or The Sims Vacation. The Sims is basically like real life except you can make it turn out however you want. You can even be famous if you want. Or be a homeless person – it’s completely up to you. Personally, I love The Sims and I used to play it all the time. I feel like games like that are much better than interactive fiction because they’re more fun and there really is no way to win the game.
